Granite Sealing

Granite sealing is the process of applying a protective product that soaks into the microscopic pores of the stone to help block liquids, oils, and soil from entering. This protection makes stains less likely, reduces the risk of bacteria and odors becoming trapped in the surface, and allows routine cleaning to be more effective and efficient.

Granite is extremely hard and resistant to heat and scratches, but hardness does not mean it is completely closed to liquids. Many granites are naturally porous enough for colored liquids, grease, and soil to work their way below the surface. Sealing lowers the absorbency of the stone so spills stay on top longer, giving you more time to wipe them away before they can soak in and cause a stain.

For most granite that has not been factory resonated, MARBLELIFE generally recommends professional sealing about every two years, depending on color, finish, and how heavily the surface is used. Light colored or heavily used kitchen countertops may benefit from more frequent evaluations, while darker or less used surfaces might maintain protection longer. During your visit, your technician will test and discuss the condition of your existing sealer and suggest a schedule that fits your stone and lifestyle.

A simple way to check is to place a few drops of clean water on the surface and watch what happens over several minutes. If the water quickly darkens the stone or disappears into the surface, the existing protection may be weakening and it is time to consider resealing. If the water beads up and stays on top for a while before slowly spreading, your current sealer is likely still offering protection, though periodic professional evaluation is still recommended.

Our team can seal a wide variety of residential and commercial granite surfaces, including kitchen countertops, islands, backsplashes, bathroom vanities, tub surrounds, shower walls, tabletops, bar tops, fireplace surrounds, and many floor or lobby installations. If you are not sure whether a surface should be sealed, we will be happy to review it during your consultation and recommend the best care approach.

Your MARBLELIFE technician will begin by reviewing your concerns and examining the granite for any existing stains, etching, or needed repairs. The surface is then thoroughly cleaned to remove residues, oils, or previous coatings that could interfere with the new sealer. Once properly prepared, a professional grade sealer is applied, allowed to dwell so it can penetrate, and then any excess is removed to leave the stone looking natural. After the service, your technician will review basic care guidelines and answer any questions.

Most penetrating sealers used by MARBLELIFE are ready for light use within a few hours, though full cure can continue for up to a day depending on product and conditions. In many cases you can gently use your countertops later the same day, while avoiding standing water, harsh cleaners, or heavy items during the initial cure period. Your technician will provide specific guidance based on the products used in your home or business.

For most granite sealing projects, MARBLELIFE selects penetrating sealers that work inside the stone without creating a surface film, so there is little to no visible change in color or gloss once the product has cured. In some specialty situations, such as when an enhanced or deepened color appearance is desired, a different sealer or finish system may be recommended. Your technician will always explain options in advance so you understand any expected appearance change before work begins.

There are many consumer stone sealers available, but they vary widely in quality, durability, and suitability for different stone types. Applying the wrong product, or applying it over residues and previous coatings that were not properly removed, can lead to streaking, hazing, or uneven protection. A professional MARBLELIFE service includes proper surface evaluation, cleaning, product selection, and application techniques that are matched to your granite and its use, which helps ensure reliable protection and a clean, attractive result.
